Women of all ages can be prone to hair loss, however it is especially common in post menopausal women, and women who have just given birth (though the latter will usually right itself over time). With hair being such an important thing for many women, it can feel extremely disheartening if you start to notice it thinning or falling out. Luckily, there are some medications and treatments that can help with the problem. This article takes a look at four of these.

Hair Extensions

1. Hair Extensions

An appropriate solution for women suffering from both temporary and permanent hair loss, hair extensions are ideal for women who want to see an immediate change in their appearance. Women can either choose from clip in extensions, which have small combs that can be attached to existing hair; these are then removed each night, or permanent extensions. The latter usually involves a trip to the hairdressers, as a professional stylist will need to weave or bond the hair extensions to your existing hair. Although this is a more expensive option, the hair extensions will last longer (between six and twelve months).

2. Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a form of medication that slows or completely stops female hair loss. It has also been shown to promote hair growth in some patients. If you speak to your doctor about the problem, this is likely going to be the treatment that he tries you on first. A particularly good treatment for women who are experiencing thinning at the front of their head, most people do see some form of success, although you should be aware of the side effects, which include itching, redness, and irritation.

3. Hair Transplant

A more drastic solution to the two mentioned above, hair transplants are usually given to women who are experiencing hair loss due to some form of trauma, however they may also be given to women experiencing hair loss due to hereditary reasons. There are three main types of hair transplant surgery:

  • Scalp reduction surgery
  • Scalp flap surgery
  • Full hair transplant

Your doctor will be able to discuss the options with you, and recommend the best course of action to take.

4. Natural Treatments

Finally, you may also want to try a natural treatment solution. There are a number of natural herbs that, when applied to the scalp, open up the closed hair follicles. This enhances the chances of the hair growing again. Some of the herbs you may want to try include hibiscus, curry leaves, rose petals, henna, and egg oil. Each herb should be applied directly to the scalp. The success rates of each of these varies between individuals, so you may want to consider trying different combinations until you find one that you are happy with.

Although female hair loss can affect a woman’s self esteem, it is heartening to know that there are a number of treatments available that can help to aid with the problem. Always discuss any treatment options with your doctor prior.
